VLASSIDES WINERY
Vlassides Winery cultivates and manages 21 hectares of vineyards all around the village of Koilani, in Limassol, at altitudes between 700 and 1100 meters. Koilani has perfect weather with plenty of sunshine during the summer season and mild winters, without extreme low temperatures.
This microclimate helps to mature the grapes perfectly, as far as their organoleptic characteristics are concerned. Additionally, rainfall is neither severe nor often, which allows us to control the vineyards’ irrigation, in regards to timing and intensity.
TYPES / CYPRUS WINES
RED | WHITE | ROSE
The soil is sandy clay on top of a calcareous bedrock, which allows the plants to preserve a sufficient level of moisture. The ground is poor in organic matter and inorganic nutrients, which give a balanced plant growth, while gravel and high pH levels, increase draining capacity and improve structure. These types of soil are ideal for low yields and are considered excellent for cultivating red grape varieties.
The large and general reconstruction of the vineyards started in 2005 and was based on the results of many years of experimentations, which led to a very thorough renewal and modernization with the installation of new trellis systems and permanent irrigation systems. The vineyards are irrigated in order to avoid all the negative effects of the extremely dry summer climate of Cyprus, with its rare rainfall. During the summer months, the irrigation is done very carefully, always based on measurements of stem water potential, according to the water needs of every vineyard. In this way we manage to succeed in the production of high quality grapes.
This innovative and complex process is at a very advanced stage at the moment and today the Winery manages 21 hectares of vineyards with international and indigenous varieties, some of which are cultivated at experimental vineyards, aiming to produce authentic Cypriot wines. The red varieties include Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Yiannoudi, Agiorgitiko and Maratheftiko and the whites include Xynisteri, Sauvignon blanc, Chardonnay, Assyrtiko and Promara.
